What Are Fordyce Spots and How Can Lip Blush Help?

What Exactly Are Fordyce Spots?

Fordyce spots are small, pale bumps that can show up on your skin, usually around your lips, cheeks, or genitals. They’re actually just sebaceous glands—tiny glands that produce oil to keep your skin and hair moisturized—that happen to be more visible than usual.

Everyone has these glands, but for some people, they’re more noticeable. Think of them as the skin’s version of freckles—completely normal, just a little different from person to person.

Why Do They Appear?

The short answer: they just do. Fordyce spots aren’t caused by anything you’ve done, and they’re not related to any disease or infection. It’s just how your body is made. Some people have more visible sebaceous glands, while others don’t. They’re not contagious, and they’re definitely not a sign that something is wrong with you.

How Lip Blush Might Help:

  1. Camouflaging the Spots: Fordyce spots are small, pale or yellowish bumps on the lips caused by enlarged sebaceous (oil) glands. Lip blush can help blend the color of the skin, making the spots less noticeable by covering the lips with a uniform pigment. The pigment used in lip blush may mask the contrast between the spots and the surrounding lip tissue.

  2. Evening Out Lip Color: Since Fordyce spots can create uneven patches of color, lip blush can help create an overall even tone, making the spots less prominent.

  Important Considerations:

  • Temporary Solution: Lip blush does not remove or treat Fordyce spots; it only covers them cosmetically. The spots will still be present underneath the pigment.
  • Consultation with a Professional: If you have Fordyce spots, it’s important to discuss with a cosmetic tattoo professional or dermatologist whether lip blush is a good option for you. Some people may have sensitive lips or skin, and tattooing could irritate the spots.
  • Pigment Color: The success of camouflaging the spots depends on the pigment used and how closely it matches your natural lip color.

Lip blush is a cosmetic tattooing procedure that involves applying pigment to the lips to enhance their color and shape. While lip blush is not a medical treatment for Fordyce spots, it can visually minimize the appearance of Fordyce spots in some cases.
